I grew up around Catholicism and Eastern orthodox religion. I learned about Protestants in school and didn’t know anyone who belong to that religion. Later on when I started traveling more I realized that majority of Germany was actually Protestant and not Catholic. I guess I was blinded by political power and glamour of Vatican.
In the beginning, Christians where prosecuted but once Christianity was recognized as a official religion of Rome (by Theodosius I who ruled from 379 to 395 ) it developed and flourished .When addressing the differences between Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox Church we need to know that split was political and power game between Rome and Constantinople. What I learned was that powerful roman church wanted to keep wealth in the church by not allowing priests to get married and pass down their earnings to their blood line explaining that they are following example of Jesus Christ who was not married to stay celibate and pure. Other differences are that Catholic Church gives great attention to Holly Mother where in Eastern orthodox she is known as a saint but is not idolized as much as Catholics do. They pay much more attention to holy trinity between Holy Father, Son and holly spirit. To symbolize that, when making cross sign during prayer they do it with 3 fingers, Catholics with full hand. Greeting close friend and family, in traditional they kiss 3 times in the cheek. Orthodox Church doesn’t recognize Pope or centralized type of hierarchy like Catholics do. Catholic services were held for longest time in Latin, Orthodox services are held in Old Slavic in most of Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. Latin never was part of Easter Orthodox liturgy. I know that Christmas and New Year come in 7 days difference. Catholic come first and then eastern
