The Cold War was a struggle between the two greatest powers of that time, the USSR and the United States after World War II. Americans were wary of communism and the Soviets distrusted Americans. “We have to get tough with the Russians. They don’t know how to behave. They are like bulls in a china shop. They are only 25 years old. We are over 100 and the British are centuries older. We have got to teach them how to behave. – Harry Truman, 1945” (1). The exact date when the war started is unclear; there was not any one single event that started it, but the disagreement was finally acknowledged with some big political moves starting in 1947.
Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union. He had invaded all Eastern Europe. In response, the United States, created the Marshall Plan that provided financial aid for the reconstruction needed for Europe. This was the beginning of the back and forth politics. The Soviet Union fired back with the Zhdanov Doctrine which stated that the United States was trying for global domination through imperialism; While the Soviet Union wanted to eliminate imperialism. The USA responded back with the “long telegram”. In 1949 the United States, combined with other European allies, created the NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organization to help …show more content…

East Germany was Communist. In 1949, the Soviet Union had created an atomic bomb and the idea of a nuclear war was terrifying. Fidel Castro of Cuba wanted to align himself with the Soviet Union. In 1962, Cuba was seen setting up nuclear missiles which resulted in the US creating a barricade to block future deliveries of war supplies. To end the barricade, the Soviet Union and the United States came to an agreement; if the US removed missiles from Turkey then they Soviet Union would remove the missiles from Cuba. During the War in Vietnam the two world powers were on opposing sides, but never fought each other
