On September 1, 1939 Germany invaded Poland beginning the Second World War. The 1940s was nothing but war and violence. Germany invaded Poland, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor bringing the U.S into the fight, Germany betrayed the Soviet Union and invaded Russia, U-Boat warfare occurred in the Atlantic, and the U.S opened a Western Front in France. All these played a part in the raging Second World War that claimed over 60 million lives. World War II is an important part of history because new strategies and tactics were introduced, such as new technology and the era of nuclear weapons. The Eastern Front beginned on June 22, 1941 when the German and Russian guards were due to change as usual. When the two sides were about to exchange salutes instead the Russian’s were met with gunshots that killed them instead. After theses onslaughts happen on the huge front the Germans made quick victories at Bialystok, Minsk, Smolensk, Bryansk, Uman, Nikolaev, Kiev, and Odessa. The Russian’s managed to halt the German advance at the battles of Leningrad and Moscow inflicting huge losses to the German side. The Eastern Front was a whole new ball game for the German army, there was less food to eat, hardly any beds to sleep on, miles of empty country side, and the villages were filthy compare to the West. This was a tougher war for the German army, as resistance was more fierce, losses were greater, and pieces of equipment left on the road.On the roadside were hundreds of German graves that each told their stories and at what battle they died at too. The prisons on the Eastern Front were more brutal as well. Hundreds of Russian prisoners were gassed in these prisons that were too weak to work in the labor camps they were sent too. Prisoners unloaded from boxcars would collapse from exhaustion from miles of miles of travel and having to stand throughout the ride to the camp, and as they reached to their barracks 250 would die from exhaustion and more the next day
