Abstract
Drug abuse is a worldwide problem that affects millions of people (UNODC, 2012), and Maldives is no exception. Drug misuse or abuse refers to the use of a drug for purposes for which it was not intended or using a drug in excessive quantities.
This report content knowledge of drugs abuse and addiction, their difference. Data collected from Maldives drug user.
Introduction
A drug is a chemical substance especially one prescribed by a medical provider that is used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a condition or disease.
“Drug misuse or abuse refers to the use of a drug for purposes for which it was not intended or using a drug in excessive quantities. Drug addiction is a state of physical or psychological dependence on a drug. Cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy are illegal drugs most commonly used” (Powell, 2011)
Drug addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance eg alcohol, cocaine, nicotine or engages in an activity e.g. gambling, sex, shopping that can be pleasurable but the continuation of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary responsibilities and concerns.
