Did you know that in 1964 three men that volunteered for Freedom Summer’s voting drive mysteriously disappeared in what was at the time segregated Mississippi? James Earl Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman were the men who were on their way to the Congress of Racial Equality or CORE. This event led to many outcries and protests across the country. (1964 Civil Rights Act) The African American Civil Rights Movement was a fight for equality and social justice during the mid-1900s. This fight was for African Americans to get equal rights as white people. However, even though the Civil War ended slavery, it still didn’t end the discrimination against many minorities. These are the rights that had been taken away from them during eras such as Jim Crow, Slavery, Etc; However, minorities still didn’t get the same equality as whites and still weren’t treated equally. (Causes and Effects of the American Civil Rights Movement). 1964’s Civil Rights Movement also ended the Jim Crow Era. Jim Crow was what made sure that “whites” and “blacks” had separate things, or, also known as segregation. Some cases of this are water fountains, they would in most cases have one for “whites” and then one for “colored” people. The ending of these laws made sure that everyone had access to the same accommodations. Therefore, both whites and blacks had equal access to things such as restaurants, restrooms, and public transportation. This also enabled other minority groups and women to strive for equality for themselves as well. (The Civil Rights Act of 1964:A Long Struggle for Freedom). The Civil Rights Movement challenged the morality of Jim Crow and segregation. Also, it helped the construction of the “Civil Rights Act of 1964” and the Voting Rights Act. All of which helped improve equality in America.
