Raskolnikov’s second dream focuses on feelings. The murder is finally having some internal feelings about the crime he committed and the situation he is in. The two emotions I believe he is feelings are paranoid and guilt. Looking at a psychology stand point people dream to rehearse certain behaviors of self-defense in safety of dreams to get better at in the real world. People also dream to allow people to become something or someone they cannot be, or say what we do not say on a daily basis. In Raskolnikov’s second dream he is rehearsing the murder he committed and doesn’t want to admit to himself he actually did the dirty deed. Raskolnikov states that, “never in his life heard such weird sounds-howls, wails, and grinding of teeth, blows curses” this statement shows a complete opposite side of how Raskolnikov committed his murder. His murder was fast and silent. When Raskolnikov experiences this dream he is feeling guilt. He isn’t able to comprehend the beating of the old woman in his dream or even in his own murder. Cause of Raskolnikov crime he now has to deal with the consequences living in guilt and knowing what he did was extremely wrong.

Another guilty/paranoid moment that happens in Raskolnikov’s second dream is the women under the cloak who symbolizes Alyona. Alyona being the woman Raskolnikov murders. Raskolnikov describes Alyona, “sitting on a chair in the corner, the old woman bent double so that he couldn’t see her face” and as she is sitting there her laugh gets louder and makes Raskolnikov feeling guilty and paranoid. Even though Raskolnikov couldn’t see her face his mind has already made up that Alyona was under the cloak mocking him and making him feeling extremely guilty for the crime he has
