The rise of Veganism in light of Celebrity Influence Veganism is becoming more popular among our generation…why? It is no secret celebrities have a big influence on American’s decisions, buying methods, ideologies, and even diets through the wide outreach they have on the news and shows we watch, the magazines we read, and the social media we follow. With sites such as Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat becoming widely used by today’s population, celebrity outreach is wider than ever. For example, vegan items do not include milk, eggs, honey, animal stock, cheese or any dairy product for that matter. Even marshmallows are not considered vegan because they contain gelatin which has collagen in it from animals’ skin and bones. Many non-vegans wonder then, how do vegans obtain nutrients such as protein, calcium, iron, B-12, Omega-3s, etc.? Cynthia Sass points out in her article, “How to go Vegan and Still Get All Your Nutrients”, “Vegans and omnivores alike can get all the nutrients their bodies need, in the right balance. It's just that vegan diets need to be "appropriately planned," as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has pointed out” (Sass). There are many plant-based foods containing all of the nutrients mentioned beforehand that vegans can consume. For example, to gain protein vegans can eat beans, soymilk, tofu, nuts, peanut butter, seeds, etc. While all of these foods are great sources of protein, vegans must keep in mind they will need to consume much more of these foods to meet their protein requirements than they would if they had a chicken breast or any other serving of meat. Like Sass points out, vegan foods are accessible and attainable to meet nutrient values but prior planning needs to be done. If new vegans do not plan accordingly many negative side effects will ensue. With many vegan celebrity followers being young impressionable teenagers, nutrient intake is even more important to contribute to healthy growth and development during the adolescent stage. As David Roberson points out in his article, “Vegan Diets: Practical Advice for Athletes and Exercisers”, “Vegans have been shown to be at higher risk of fracture due to lower calcium intakes… low intakes of calcium are particularly problematic for children and teenagers, where higher calcium requirements are required for bone development” (9).
