Cellular Respiration Tatiana Garcia Biology 181 Lab 72256 September 27, 2017 This experiment tested the cellular respiration rate of three different beans to investigate whether or not size effects the production of Carbon Dioxide by using a CO2 sensor. Results of this lab suggested that the size of a bean more than likely has little to no relationship to the Carbon Dioxide concentration and this was found through testing three different species/sizes of beans with a Carbon Dioxide sensor. The original hypothesis was not supported which could be because of a possible faulty sensor or even due to the fact that only 9 grams of lima beans were tested instead of 10 grams like the others. Introduction: Cellular Respiration refers to the biochemical pathway by which cells release energy from the comical bonds and provide energy for the essential processes of life. (Enger and Ross., 2003) There are three steps included in the cellular respiration process which are glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and lastly the electron transport chain. Glycolysis is the breakdown of a glucose molecule in …show more content…

(Engleberg et al., 2001). As seen in Figure 1 and Figure 2, the black beans, which were the smallest, had the highest Carbon Dioxide concentration at the end of the four minutes at 1,066 ppm. The results of this lab could have been altered because of human error. Humans naturally breathe out Carbon Dioxide which could affect the calibration of the Carbon Dioxide sensor when we were inserting the beans in to the chamber. This source of human error could have possibly been the reason as to why there is was a sudden drop in the first ten seconds while running the test for Lima Beans (see Fig. 2). The significance of this experiment was to test what may be a possible factor when it comes to cellular respiration,
