There is a variety of reasons why a book is challenged or banned indefinitely.. Censors conduct these bans because they feel books with certain content wether it be violence, sexual acts, the use of a certain language and other various reasons are inappropriate for today’s youth. These are all aspects of the real world though and it is unrealistic to hide children from reality. Judy Blume once said "Children are not innocent. They are just inexperienced”. Rowling. This book includes witchcraft, portrayals of homosexuality, drunkenness and violence. People believe that it is inappropriate for younger children and should not be allowed in libraries. This book even though it is scrutinized nation wide excites children and helps them create fantasies of another world. Other books besides the Harry Potter series that present the same kind of imagination for kids that are currently banned include The Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. These childhood classics fill children with imagination that is ignited when one can go on adventures through books with talking animals, witches and wizards. Their are other genres included in this list of forbidden books. Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings discusses a sensitive subject. The subject of Rape is not an easy topic for anyone to discuss. However, unlike the evening news a novel like this can deliver this sensitive subject with empathy. Although rape is not a comfortable subject for anyone it is nothing new to the community of young women.Allowing censors to remove these books from shelves, closes our eyes to the world around us. Books such as these can educate the lost or console the suffering. If someone is sensitive towards a subject such as this one, no one is forcing them to read it. Someone who wishes to become more knowledgeable on the topic should not be deprived of the opportunity to do
