Years back, migrant farm workers worked the fields of California in horrible conditions such as no breaks and pesticide exposure. Years before that, poor children had to work in factories and mills, losing fingers from accidents as they live off of stale bread and coffee. But two people were able to help these people from the unfair treatment they were up against, Cesar Chavez and Mother Jones. In John Hartmire’s essay “At the Heart of a Historic Movement” is about the movement that Cesar Chavez had lead and about Hartmire when he was a child during the movement. Hartmire had made it seem like the movement that Chavez was leading did not allow him grow up like the other children. He sounds like he was against him at first when he was a child because he would hardly see his father and his family were always attending rallies for Chavez’s movement. Hartmire says in his essay “I was dragged to marches in the coachella and san joaquin valleys. I was taken out of school to attend union meeting and rallies that interested me even less that geometry class.

What made Cesar Chavez an Effective leader? Cesar Chavez was born in Yuma,Arizona in 1927. He moved a lot and went to 36 different schools. He lived through the Great Depression and worked in fruit and vegetable fields as a farmer. On a regular basis California farmers would face mistreatment and abuse mainly by the growers taking advantage of them all.
To begin with, Chavez uses logos in his speech through a rhetorical question, “Who gets killed in the case of violent revolution? The poor, the workers.” The people who are arguing for violent revolutions are mostly poor workers whom Chavez refers to. Chavez uses logic to show these people that if they use violent revolts, they are most likely the ones going to be killed which for the most part will deter the people who are aiming for this. Another appeal Chavez uses is ethos to show everyone as people we are expected to do the right thing.
Through this union, Chavez fought to protect the Union and its vision most importantly its laborers. He sought to end the bracero program, which was deploring the face and dignity of the farm worker. In hopes of revitalizing the agricultural farmworker movement, Chavez called on another tough and invigorated farmworker advocate named Dolores Huerta. Dolores was tough as nails and to this day, still fights for farmworker, and civil rights. Dolores Huerta was born in 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico.
Cesar Chavez fought for farm workers rights in the field. Cesar’s motto “ Si Se Puede” motivated people to keep fighting after his death. He fought for farm workers because he didn't like they way farm owners were treating them. He did that by boycotting grapes, protesting, strikes, hosting marches and fasts. The author wrote,” The coming years would bring much more adversity: Strikes and boycotts, marches and fasts, victories and defeats.”
“Non-violence is more powerful than violence” Cesar Chavez. Cesar Chavez was the first Mexican-American labor leader during the 20th century who wanted to fight for better working conditions for farmworkers and a better pay. Cesar Chavez was a great leader who put his parents and labors needs above his very own needs and strongly considered that there was a considerable change that needed to happen for migrant farmworkers. Chavez was born on March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona. Before the Great Depression in 1937, Chavez’s parents owned a family farm, but during the Great Depression they lost their farm because they couldn’t pay taxes and became migrant farm workers.
In 1938, the Chavez family became migrant farmworkers due to losing their land during the Great Depression. They had to leave Arizona and headed to California to find work. They roamed from farm to farm just so they can find work. Once Cesar started school he soon realized how cruel the world really was. He had to deal with racist jokes and rulers getting whacked on his knuckles just because he spoke Spanish.
The interest was so high that the Chavez couldn’t pay for it. As the result, they lost their house, their land, and everything. In 1939, Chavez and his family moved to California and became migrant farm workers after they lost their house and their land during the Great
Martin Luther King, Jr.” Cesar Chavez made a great impact on the people there that day. This speech, along with many others that he gave, were to influence people to not purchase food that was grown using pesticides. There were many people getting sick, including children, and some had even died from cancer. Chavez, along with many others, were able to greatly change people’s views on topics.
In the text his main purpose was to persuade farm workers not to use violence to get their (farm workers) demands met, and boycott grape farms. In doing so the farmers would have to give in to demands of labor leaders. However, due to the struggles of others Throughout his speech there is a determined and insistent tone.
Cesar Chavez has inspirational core values to accept all people, celebrate the community, respect life and the environment, non-violence, innovation, preference to help the most needy, knowledge, sacrifice, service to others, and determination. His first core value to accept all people, I was raised to not judge people based on their race or religion. Being raised this way has made me curious about other peoples backgrounds and cultures. Therefore, during my years in college I would like to spend a semester abroad in order to incorporate myself in another culture and learn as much as possible. Celebrating the community, one of the major ways that I have done this is being involved in Florence All-Around 4-H. We take pride in giving back to the community whether it is to help an elderly couple clean up their yard or volunteering for town events.
