Growing up, I have always been taught the lesson, “treat other people the way you want to be treated,” and I have always abided by it. Kids who have come in contact with a parent or teacher have heard this saying at least once in their life. So, why is this expression different for a particular gender? Gender roles have been a contentious issue that has faced people all around the world for decades, yet there has never been a concrete solution. It infuriates me that women face disparities and obstacles to progress in life because they are categorized in some essence. This is true not only in a woman’s social life, but occupational life too as exemplified by Chad Bray in “Bonuses for Bank Executives Should Be Tied to Gender Diversity, Review Says.” As expressed by Chad Bray, the financial service industry doesn’t “bring women into more senior roles,” and ultimately fail in highlighting “women out there whose skills would be an enormous asset to any firm,” (Bray). This is unacceptable especially because we live in a generation where discrimination against any person for any reason is unethical and unmoral. My parents have never faced this problem because they have their own self-run business. But I know parents, particularly mothers who struggle to progress in their occupation because of the sole fact they are females. And in Britain, this is particularly apparent in the financial service industry. The statement that “fewer women progress to senior levels,” in the financial industry should be a “wake-up call to everyone.” Not only does this discourage women who wish to partake in this notable area of workforce, but also it sets examples for future generations who should participate in any area of workforce they wish
