After 10 years working as a registered nurse in many aspects of healthcare, felt an overwhelming desire to advance my career and myself to expand my role in caring for others. Becoming a nurse practitioner has always been a goal of mine. During my time working as a nursing manager, I became acutely aware of the need of skilled and talented providers that desire to provide passionate care to all individuals. I became especially concerned with the needs those with limited access to healthcare services. I knew my desire to care for individuals in a more autonomous role and I set out to develop the skills needed to meet the need I witnessed.
As we transition into the new role of NPs, our scope of practice expands. Moreover, as our responsibilities increase, we later become policy makers, and develop autonomy and decision–making skills. NPs are responsible for providing safe nursing care with more specialized knowledge and advanced education. We are also responsible for pursuing continuing education and advanced knowledge to remain competent quality providers, and meet the needs of the community. With our acquired repertoire of skills, it is essential that we utilize them to make informed decisions and collaborate with our community to promote wellness and healthy living.
The evolution of the United States healthcare delivery system has significantly influenced many areas of nursing practice, education, and leadership. The evolving healthcare delivery system impacts nursing practice because nurses have assumed expanded roles and responsibilities, including care coordination, patient education, and advocacy, and are adopting evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes. Another way the healthcare delivery system enhances nursing practice is by emphasizing cultural competence and addressing disparities in healthcare access and outcomes to create optimal outcomes for all patients, regardless of population. The evolution of our healthcare delivery system impacts nursing education by adapting to meet the demands of a changing healthcare workforce.
Health care as a whole in our country is evolving, becoming more complex as the health care needs of our respective communities change and also becoming complicated. Conversely, changes in the nursing profession are occurring on an everyday basis in an attempt to keep up with the different dynamics happening in our health care landscape today. These changes include, added responsibilities, increased demand in additional training and nurses charged with furthering their education. Health organizations and schools should engage in a conscious effort to increase the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree (BSN) to 80 percent by 2020 (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). IOM (2010) further recommended in their landmark, Future of Nursing report,
Not only recruit the new nurses motivate and inspire the future generations of nursing profession then we must come together in creating a strategic plan that can reflect, address and continually monitor the challenges new nurses face when being formally introduced into their professional community. By itself, the evolving transition experience of the new nurses has the possible to connect and advance the entire profession by making visible the current challenges and triumphs of the entire nursing community. additional, I would concern that it is not enough to just understand what new nurses experience during their journey from nurse to advance roles; this is but one phase in their socialization to the profession of nursing and a relative first step in their ongoing professionalization as nurses. Having said that, I believe that it is by seeking to understand the lived experience of the nurse that we become aware of the challenges they face not only as nurses but as individuals within social, economic, political, developmental, cultural, physical, professional and institutional

My knowledge in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) continues to expand as I progress through the DNP program. The knowledge I have attained while in the study of the DNP I and DNP II is priceless. For example, recognizing stakeholders and utilizing networking has helped me to progress on my DNP project (Gokenbach, 2012). I also have a better understanding as well as the purpose of a DNP project. My mentors have been great in directing me in remaining on the right track.
As I embark on my journey to become a registered nurse at the master's level, I anticipate significant changes in my role and responsibilities. As a registered nurse, I will transition from a student nurse to a fully licensed healthcare professional. This transition entails a shift from primarily observing and assisting in patient care to taking on a more independent and autonomous role in providing comprehensive care to individuals, families, and communities. The standards for my new role as a registered nurse are established by professional nursing organizations, regulatory bodies, and healthcare institutions.
