The 1920’s were a period of change and excitement. The war had just ended, soldiers had returned home to their families, and the economy booming. The 1920s roared because of prohibition, fashion and entertainment, and the booming economy. Firstly, prohibition played a role in the excitement of the 1920s. Even though the sale, production, and consumption of alcohol had been prohibited, people could still drink if they were willing to pay. This is what initiated the start of speakeasies. Speakeasies were elegant, private, exclusive clubs with fashionable interiors, and bootleg booze readily available. They provided their patrons with the booze they desired, as well as an exciting and sociable atmosphere. Prohibition also had positive social effects for Canada. Fashion in the 1920s was elegant, and featured fashionably coordinated and accessorized outfits. After the war ended, fashion went through drastic changes with the passing of corsets and bustles. This provided designers with more freedom, and allowed them to express themselves in their clothing. This resulted in women dressing in more colourful fabrics, and dresses made with silk and rayon hosiery. Another change regarding fashion that occurred in the 1920s was that the dresses were lighter because of synthetic materials, brighter, and shorter. Entertainment was also an important part of what made the 1920s an exciting time to be alive. After the war ended, people wanted to forget the war, and were focused on their entertainment.
