Writing Assignment #4 Book Review: Susan Magoffin, Down the Santa Fe Trail and into Mexico Susan Magoffin’s diary is a primary document that accounts her experiences traveling along the on the Santa Fe Trail (the Trail). Magoffin, being the first female to travel this trading route, was able to give a true insight to readers of how the conditions of that trail were. Her diary is regarded as the first substantial account of life on the Trail, however is criticized that Magoffin’s white privilege is what made her experience as it was. The critics argue, that the experience of traveling along the Santa Fe Trail as a non-Euro-American, would differ drastically then that of Susan Magoffin. I agree that being an upper-class, white woman, Magoffin

The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican Civilization that lived in what is now Mexico from the 14th century to the 16th century. They were known for their advanced agricultural practices , which allowed them to sustain a large population in a relatively small environment . This essay will explore Aztecs’ agricultural practices, including their use of chinampas, or floating gardens, and their complex systems of canals and irrigation. The Aztecs should be remembered for their agricultural practices which were incredibly advanced for their time because they developed sophisticated systems of irrigation and crop cultivation that allowed them to support a large population in a region that was not always in the right conditions for agriculture. They built chinampas, which were like floating gardens, artificial islands built on a freshwater lake for agriculture.
The story “Into the Gorge” by Ron Rash was my favorite story in the text. The story provided setting that sustained the mood of mystery. It started with narrating the story of Jesse’s aunt and her mysterious death. Then, the story took place in the woods. The description of how Jesse interacted with the land conveyed his relationship to his father.

A canyon that is a perfect, untouched place is the setting for the short story All Gold Canyon by Jack London. This story has a human vs. nature conflict in it that is the basis for the whole story. To truly understand this story one must know that symbolism of nature, the conflicts, and why Jack London probably wrote this story.

The reading passage presents three competing theories that could explain how the settlements of New Mexico 's Chaco Canyon were used. The lecturer casts doubts on each of these theories in order to demonstrate that the arguments that support them are not convincing. From the reading passage, it is firstly stated that one possible use of these settlements was residential since it could host hundreds of people. The lecturer refutes that saying that if hundreds used to live there, more fire places should be found. According to the lecturer, the fires places that were found in these settlements are only enough for 10 people.
Spanish and Catholic influence is not disregarded in this text; regardless, it remains one of the best educated outlooks of ancient Mayan culture available. The Popol Vuh describes that the creation of man, and then their wives, were successfully formed from the staple food supply in the area, Maize. The Maya took something in which they identified with life, to help explain the complexity of creation. Items like corn and water were on the same level as blood and flesh in the Mayan world. Important articles to life like productive agriculture of the existing Maya, became important to the understanding the creation of
