There exists a society in which nothing is regulated; only a society by definition; only an aggregate of people living in the same area. Chaos is rampant, and there is no order to ensure regulation and unity. However, everyone is allowed their freedom and the freedom to experience and believe whatever they choose. On the other extreme end of the spectrum, there exists a society in which every aspect of life is controlled by the government, from birth to death. The citizens happily consume, controlled by the impulsive desires granted from the government. Everything and everyone are conditioned under the State’s orders, but there exists no opposition or rebellion due to the fact that everyone is happy. While modern Western society freely criticizes others where there is rampant suffering and unhappiness, it is irrational to believe the society filled with unhappiness and chaos, albeit possessing individual freedoms, to be superior to a society where their lives are restricted but without instability, chaos, or unhappiness. During his debate with Mustapha Mond on the sacrifices, and lack thereof, their respective societies make for the sake of happiness, John states, “I’m claiming the right to be unhappy… I claim them all” (Huxley, 163). John claims all that comes along with freedom; the good and the bad. Those living in current society, where there exists a balance of social stability and individual freedoms, would choose their familiar lifestyles over the World State’s, which has no individuality or innate emotional attachments. However, if in the situation where preconceived notions were removed, the logical choice would be to choose the society where all is stable and all are happy. When applied to real life, however, it must be understood that the World State would not be humane or worth the costs due to its impossibility. It would not be feasible to ensure total stability or continuous happiness for all like in the novel. The World State achieves social stability through soma, a miracle happy drug, and the conditioning of every citizen from their genetics to how they will spend their lives. In the case where there is an attempt to revert the citizens to normal life, it would be inhumane just as it would be inhumane attempting to convert modern citizens to the World State way of life.
