Question 1: Why are you interested in pursuing a career in law, and why are you applying to Chapman Tripp?

My initial inspiration to pursue a career in law was not particularly insightful. I decided to study law after seeing the glamour and high-tension drama of law firms on TV shows like “Suits” and “Scandal”. When I began to look deeper at the law course I was going to study, however, it was very clear that the law was a discipline that allowed me to combine my love of history and reading with my personal strengths of writing, researching and debating. I perform best when I am challenged, and law is a career that will always challenge me to develop my knowledge and think outside the box. I appreciate how a career in law would expose me to a range of diverse practice areas and clients, and how I can apply the skills and structures developed at university to different problems I face.
I firmly believe that Chapman Tripp would be the ideal place for me to develop my law career. The culture of the firm encourages its employees to challenge themselves in a dynamic way, but appreciates the value of respect, integrity and collaboration. I want to work at Chapman Tripp because I want the opportunity to work at the best firm, with the best people, and in an environment where I am challenged and encouraged. I am attracted to the importance the firm places on wider community involvement and I feel the values of Chapman Tripp strongly align with my own.
So while a small part of me still thinks of Harvey Specter and Olivia Pope when I look at why I am pursuing a legal career, the real reason lies in the fact that it combines the things that I am good at with the things that I love to do, allowing me to thoroughly enjoy my entire degree, and hopefully my future career at Chapman

At its essence, much of law is about solving problems and while I’m confident with my ability to adapt to new skills, ultimately I feel my problem solving ability will come through in any task I am given, and will allow me to succeed.
