Identity impacts how students view themselves. A teacher can either positively or negatively impact a student’s viewpoint of their self (?). Chapter 2 is about building a positive concept of self for the students and of others. A teacher should develop positive expectations for all of the students. Chapter 2 includes many activities that help students develop a positive self-image. Positive self-image helps children create a positive perception of themselves and this attitude will influence their development. A teacher can help students create and maintain positive self-concepts about themselves. Chapter 2 discusses activities that promote positive self-images among children. There are 4 main goals introduced that teachers can meet to help students meet that criteria. Activities that will create a sense of belonging would be introductions, meet your neighbor, and one big machine. Introductions and meet your neighbor are activities that will have the students learn more information about each other. These activities will create a sense of belonging because the students will feel known and care about. Activities that will teach about valuing cultural backgrounds are creating a “me” collage, ten things about me, and the color of me. These activities focus on the individual student and promote pride and acceptance of who they are as a person. Activities that encourage students to feel confident in their abilities are share a compliment, role playing, and family grouping. These activities help children feel good about themselves and develop confidence. It is important to teach activities that help children gain life skills.
