How does Howells use linguistic capital to categorize his characters? Men who are well spoken are trusted greater, looked upon more favorably, and in most cases are more successful than their poorly spoken counterparts. Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein stated, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”. Silas Lapham, a character more inclined to embarrass himself with his lack of linguistic savvy than to impress his successful peers, is an example of a man with poor linguistic capital.

The use of children in the Sierra Leone Civil War was widespread, with up to 10,000 children taking part in the conflict and up to eighty percent of RUF forces between the ages of seven and fourteen. Ishmael is one of these children. In his memoir, A Long Way Gone, Lieutenant Jabati and his men exploit several techniques to transform these frightened children into ruthless killing machines. They do this through the use of drugs, pop culture, as well as character and emotional manipulation. Tactics like these create habits and addictions that are almost impossible to break.
In my geometric character analysis I analyzed Paul and Erik Fisher. Paul and Erik are brother that have a kind of broken relationship. Paul is the main character in the story while Erik seems to be praised by both his parent because of the “Erik Fisher football dream”. Erik seems to be always in the background causing mischief without the parents seeing it while Paul is just trying to get through 7th grade. I made Paul an octagon colored in light blue that fades into an orange.

The leader I chose was Martin Luther King. He fought for equal rights. The I have a dream Speech reaffirmed the commitment to non-violent resistance, standing one’s ground for one’s God-given rights, the basis for human dignity and strength for all, regardless of race, religion, or color. One of the most important characteristics of a good leader is that they must be actually prepared to lead under any circumstance. This sounds like something that should go without saying, but it is surprising just how many people who are in a leadership role are not prepared to take an active role in leading their team. A good leader does not sit back and observe what is going
