The film started by showing one of the main characters as a child named Leonard Lowe who is a victim of the disease encephalitis lethargica, or sleepy sickness. It shows what happens to Leonard and the development of the disease on him that reached to the point where he couldn’t go out with his friends anymore to prevent the spreading of the disease and so that he wouldn’t be helpless if the disease attacked. The movie then shows the story of another main character in the year 1969 which was Dr. Sayer who tries to apply in a hospital in the Bronx. Dr. Sayer gives information on himself and what he had been doing in the past years of his life which were doing research. His mother then sees him fully conscious for the first time since he was a child. After the successful treatment, he then talks to other doctors about his idea on extending the funds to be able to give the rest of the patients the L Dopa treatment. He and Leonard made a film footage of the before and after of the treatment. The patrons of the hospital were encouraged and donated money. After receiving the medication, all of the patients of the hospital seem to be fully recovered, and for a while they experienced living again like normal people and they were all overwhelmed by joy and excitement. But unfortunately, the treatment caused side effects He begins to experience convulsions, paranoia, and psychotic behavior. His body also begins to build a tolerance for it, so that his Parkinsonian symptoms begin to return. Although Dr. Sayer does not want to give up, Leonard eventually returns to his previous state. After a while, it also happened to the rest of Sayer's patients. The film ends with a speech given by Sayer, who reflects on the lessons that his patients taught him over the course of the previous summer and how it was the best summer of those who had encephalitis
