Literary characters are often the main topic in novels. These characters lure people in and keep them interested in the book. Authors make characters memorable through their personalities. For example, Percy Jackson the son of Poseidon is lovable and memorable. In Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief, the author characterizes Percy as brave, sarcastic, and loyal. Percy exhibits bravery throughout the book with his actions. For example, when he faces his first monster he, “swung the sword” (Riordan 13). Percy has never even used a sword, but when Mrs. Dodds comes after him his demigod instincts kick in. Another example occurs when Perry faces the Chimera. Percy says, “I couldn’t let them get hurt. He exhibits sarcasm throughout his adventure. For example when he says, “Gabe could sniff out money like a blood hound, which was surprising, since his own smell should’ve covered up everything else” (Riordan 31). Percy uses the humor in this quote to say his step dad has body odor. Through his sarcastic comment Percy shows how much he does not like his step dad. Another example is when he says, “Once I got over the fact that my Latin teacher was a horse, we had a nice tour, though I was careful not to walk behind him” (Riordan 75). Through this quote, Percy is giving his story a sense of humor because there is a chance of stepping in poop walking behind a horse. Percy is able to allow readers to visualize just how crazy his situation really is. When Percy and his friends get back from their quest he says, “I told her it seemed a shame not to bury her in it” (Riordan 354). He uses this humor to turn a sad situation into something funny to him. Doing this, Percy is able to give comic relief to the reader.
