Imagine being trapped in a world where you had no choice. No choice of a job, not even a choice of a mate! Everything was decided for you already. If you knew there was a better way of life would you fight for it? Well that 's what Jonas did in the book “The Giver”( by Lois lowry) . Jonas is the protagonist in the book, and there are many things he 's unsure about in his society. Jonas (protagonist) challenges his society by , disagreeing with the ‘release’ of the elderly and imperfect babies, disagreeing with color blindness, and ultimately in leaving the society. He does this because his father released a twin, he disagreed with sameness, and wanted to live a good life, and give the people their memories. First, Jonas challenges the society by disagreeing with ‘release’. He does this because the giver shows him the truth about it; that the people of the society are killed. In the end Jonas challenges the society by leaving it. He left the society to live a life worth living and so the memories of the world would return to the people. He couldn 't live a life hoarding all of his thoughts. Jonas felt he would be missing many important things to life if he stayed, “but if he had stayed...he would have lived a life hungry for feelings, for color, for love” (Lowry pg 173). He left because if he had stayed he would have been yearning for these things to be in his life. It made it easier to leave because the giver helped gravitate Jonas toward the idea of leaving. Next, Jonas felt he would be broken if Gabe were to be released the next day, so he took him with, “Even I voted gabriel 's release… release?” (Lowry pg 164). Jonas also left because he didn 't think Gabe should be killed. He felt connected to Gabe and life without him would be depressing. However while doing this he would be making a major rule infraction. Jonas decided to step up and leave society once and for all to find
