Curley’s wife convinces Lennie to stay and talk to her because the guys are playing a horseshoe tournament outside and none of them would leave until it was over. Lennie is still uneasy and tells her to go but she changes the subject to his dog and Lennie talks to her even though he is not supposed to. She keeps him talking even though he isn’t supposed to. She tells Lennie about her dream to become a famous actress. She uses her power to keep Lennie talking and when he tries to talk “she went on with her story quickly before she should be interrupted(pg. 88)
Throughout the novella, Lennie managed to severely hurt Curley, murder an innocent puppy, and finally murdering Curley' wife. Lennie simply cannot contain himself and seems to always end up getting into a tangle of mess that comprise of major consequences, in which Lennie must pay. Ultimately, it is not Curley's wife's fault for getting Lennie killed, when it is particularly based on Lennie's incompetence to withstand
Curley then tried all the time to get Lennie to do something that would offend or make Curley mad so he could fight with him. Lennie then had to stay as far away from Curley as he possible could. “look Lennie. You try to keep away from him, will you? Don't ever speak to him.
but he refused to talk to her. Then Curley’s wife let Lennie touch her hair. Then the books states, “She struggled violently under his hands. Her feet battered on the hay and writhed to be free; and from under Lennie’s hand came a muffled screaming” (Steinbeck 91). (R2)
Lennie is panicking because he knows he’s in trouble and is feeling shame considering what he did. He still refuses to release Curley’s wife and grows furious at the amount of noise she is producing. “ He shook her then, and he was angry with her. ‘Don’t you go yellin’,’ he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck” (91).
George and Lennie are best friends, but George made a promise to Lennie’s aunt that he would take care of him once she passed. Further into the book Lennie is in the barn crying because he accidentally killed his pup. The boss's son Curley has a wife and she walks into the barn and has a conversation
She had stopped, so Lennie released his grip. “‘He looked down at her, and carefully he removed his hand from her mouth, and she lay still. I don’t want to hurt you’, he said… When she didn’t answer nor move he bent closely over her… for a moment he seemed bewildered” (Steinbeck 91). Lennie failed to realize that he had killed Curley’s wife, even shocking himself.
In this episode, Curley’s wife is having a conversation with Lennie about her American Dream of an actress in a desperate attempt to cure her loneliness. She also consolidates Lennie about the death of the puppy. Lennie confesses his desideratum to tend the rabbits because he simply likes to pet nice things. Curley’s wife then makes the big mistake of asking him to stroke her hair, and Lennie being Lennie goes too far, gets scared, and snaps Curley’s wife’s neck,”He shook her then, and he was angry with her… And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.”
Curley’s wife discovers Lennie in the barn with the puppy and offers for him to pet her hair as it was soft. As most probably guessed, Lennie was unable to control himself when Curley’s wife no longer wanted her hair to be touched. Lennie snapped her neck in an attempt to get her to stop talking and ended up killing her as well. Lennie provides the story with a feeling of hope in the beginning. Everyone is rooting for him and wants him to live out the dream of owning and living on a farm with George.
Curley’s wife shows Lennie how soft her hair is and he starts petting it. He starts to get vicious and Curley’s wife starts getting scared and starts struggling to get away. Lennie gets scared and does the only thing he knows to do; and that is to grab onto the first thing in his vicinity. Curley’s wife starts to scream and Lennie tells her that she can’t do that or else George will come in d Lennie will get in trouble.
Curley’s wife begins to warm up at the end of the novella and starts to talk to Lennie as a mom would to a young child. She tells him her life story and Lennie is half listening the whole time. She uses Lennie as a coping mechanism and realization tool of what her life has become and how easily she could have prevented it from going the way it did. As she wraps up her autobiography, Curley’s wife questions Lennie on why he can only talk about rabbits, and Lennie responds that he likes feeling soft objects. She then allows him to stroke her soft hair, which he enjoys, but sadly Lennie’s disability leads to not him not being able to let go, and he accidentally broke Curley’s wife’s neck.
With a debilitating mental disorder, Lennie is a slave to his animal-like instincts which makes him powerless against his own mind. In the beginning of the novel, Lennie conveys his disability through his childlike thoughts and impulsive actions. While drinking potentially dangerous water, he is described like a horse since he “drank with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse” ( 3). Later on, Lennie fixates on things he cannot have like ketchup for his beans and he forgets information quickly since his mind is not capable of complex thought processes or retaining information. Since he is not always able to comprehend the events around him, he often gets into trouble in bad situations.
Many people have trust issues, which is understandable because many people are not trustworthy. In order to “be at home,” or to be peaceful, one must find at least one person to confide in. To tell them the secrets that are burdening and don’t allow someone to live their life to the fullest. This is the theme of this poem. In this poem, the author uses different literary devices to help the reader understand the poem’s theme.
