Character Analysis: The Other Wes Moore

Just imagine if you lost someone who was extremely immediate or someone you barely even knew. Afterall, they’re two completely different situations, but both Wes’s encountered one or the other. Many children experience this complication and don’t always turn out to be at their highest quality. Moreover, leaving them with a boundless affect, having they just lost someone remarkable to them. Although this may be true, could it affect them if they weren’t there at all. Regardless, it’s likely that all children or teens have the same major effect of a “missing” father. While maybe a couple handful of kids don’t care at all, probably thinking, “Why should I care for someone who doesn’t care about me?” Additionally, people grow up without another …show more content…

In The Other Wes Moore he said, “While I knew something bad had happened, I still wasn’t sure what it meant.” His father died, which caused an immense burden on the family. Causing his mother to stay up late nights, and curiosity and confusion to flow within his mind. “I was still in the wind tunnel. I heard that my father had “passed on” but had no idea where he’d gone.” This quote obviously shows exactly what Wes was thinking at the point of his father's death. He realized people's attitudes were changing, his family became less happy, all they really expressed was pain and blank faces. Quoted from the book it shows what pain went through the family, “Nikki took his death worse than the rest of us.” As Wes said near the time of the death of his father. Losing somebody puts so much pain in your heart it can change your mental state. This leads to drugs, drinking, and other pleasures that help you wash away stress, and sadness. Most of Wes’s family pushed through it, but like any other person they had their ups and downs. Wes joined military school and it really helped him later on, even though he didn’t really want to do it. Even at a young age he always had that little feeling inside of him like he was missing someone in his life as it said in the book. Even though he may not have noticed it, having an absent father probably put him through his struggles. In this case, it could have been because there wasn’t another body telling what he should do or shouldn’t do, especially his father. Wes, was being lead into his brother, Tony’s footsteps, most likely because he was the only man he could look up to. Even though the things his brother did weren’t very manly, mainly cowardly. Mainly, selling drugs to get a couple hundred dollars. Wes thought it was a good way to make money instead of trying to find a real job that doesn’t end you up in bad situations. When his mother found out about the drugs it caused pain in her heart, and she didn’t have another shoulder to lean because, unfortunately, all she really had was a bunch of drug dealers and a “missing father” for her kids. Without more people in families it can break people apart. Don’t get me wrong you don’t need a father to tell you what to do, but it could be helpful. Altogether, fathers can be the right leader if they try to
