Before Johnny was going he gave Ponyboy his book and left a note that was too late to be discovered. The note said “Stay Gold Ponyboy, Stay Gold!” Meaning stay pure and live life to the fullest, Dally is more of the opposite. The note also said to show Dally the sunset to make him not as mean and to care more about the world and to be more kind. Johnny didn’t know Dally would suicide because of him.
Ponyboy is a fourteen year old boy who lives with his older brothers, Darry and Sodapop. Ever since his parents got into an automobile crash and were killed, Ponyboy and his brothers live on their own. Johnny is a sixteen year old who comes from a tough home, with an abusive father. The characters thought that Dally was just really angry at the world, that his robbing of the bank was him attempting to blow off steam, and that his consequential death was all a result of his bad decisions. In reality, Dally had just been told about Johnny's death, and he was heartbroken. The text shows this happening when it says, “Damnit, Johnny…’ he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will. ‘Oh, damnit, Johnny, don’t die, please don’t die…’ He suddenly bolted through the door and down the hall”(Hinton 149).
Dally’s selfless personality to Ponyboy, Johnny, and the rest of the greasers, make him a hero. One time Dally demonstrated his selfless personality, is after Johnny killed Bob out of self-defense. He and Ponyboy went to Buck Merrill's place to seek help. The first thing Dally says when he answered the door was, “Okay, kids, whatta you need me for,” (Hinton 59). He didn’t even hesitate to help them and gave them money, clothes, and a plan for dodging the police.
GRABBER. In S.E Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, Dallas Winston and Johnny Cade are opposites, from their personalities to their way of life. Dally is tough, while Johnny is sensitive, yet the two are very similar. Johnny gives advice to stay the same and not change, while Dally thinks that staying tough is the only way to not get hurt. They die in different ways, but both grew up with abusive or neglectful parents.
After Johnny told him to back off the girls were talking about Dally but then Johnny and Ponyboy stuck up for him. “‘Dally’s okay,’ Johnny said defensively, and I nodded. You take up for your buddies, no matter what they do. When you’re a gang, you stick up for the members.
He could not control himself so he “robbed a grocery store” (Hinton 153). The cops were after Dally for robbing the store. Dally did this out of anger because of Johnny’s death. He did the wrong thing and his punishment from the cops was death. Dally died because he robbed the grocery store.
What this shows is that Darry would beat up Dally if he got found out that Dally got Ponyboy and Johnny out of town with money and a gun, which means that all he is doing is sticking up for his brothers. He doesn’t want them to get into any trouble or run away.
So, they went to Dally and they got some money or food, a gun, and a jacket for Ponyboy. They went to Dally because they knew if they wanted to get out of town and away from prying cops, they knew Dally would be the person to make it happen. While they were in the church Dally had sent them to a week prior, Jonny fell asleep with a cigarette still lit without Jonny realizing it. Later that day, Dally showed up and took them to lunch for some real food.
After writing that essay for English, I’ve realized that I’m not okay about the deaths of Johnny and Dally. I’m not used to not having them around anymore, I think the other guys are doing okay, but I can’t handle this. I wrote my essay on the memories and important events that occurred when Johnny and Dally were still here. I wrote about the rumble, I wrote when Cherry and I first met, and, I wrote when Johnny was killed after the incident at the church.
As Ponyboy struggles with the loss of both Johnny and Dally, this helps him to cope. He appreciated Johnny and Dally, both who helped him through tough times and were there for him until the day they died. And as unexpected as it is, Dally turns out to be the one of the golden things in Ponyboy’s life. Johnny’s letter to Ponyboy changes how he view the world around him, even as he deals with

The Outsiders is a book where a ragtag group of greasers band together and overcome victories, tragedies, and above all, build an even stronger bond of brotherhood. This story begins in the town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Ponyboy(our main character) is walking home from the movies and gets ambushed by a large group of Socs(Sociables-the “popular/rich” clique).
Dally is not strong mentally (when he couldn’t let Johnny go), he really does not do good deeds, and he does not care about any other people than only Johnny, and he’s rude to others and bad at using words. A quotation that supports my statement is, “What for? Get back in here before I beat your head in.” (p.90) This quotation supports my statement because Dally said this to Ponyboy when he hopped off the car and said to see what the deal is when he saw the old church on fire, it proves that Dally does not care about other stuff that does not involve him and that he’s rude to others and using
If Dally used justice he would have reported Two-bit. “Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things that you want to learn”-The Outsiders. Another thing that proves my point is that they learned all this stuff on the streets and they know that Johnny killed Bob, so Dally is telling the cops they went to Texas for Johnny and Ponyboy. The first time we see this is after Johnny and Ponyboy arrive fresh from the murder to seek Dally’s help. He gives them dry clothes, a loaded gun, fifty dollars, and tells them a location to hide in. He gave them the essentials they need even though he could have gone to jail. Darry would have even beat up Dally to death for helping them escape town and giving them a gun and money. According to Ponyboy, “...he [Dally] got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids—he did everything.”
