There are many different managerial styles. From the condescendingly competitive nature of Steve Jobs to the bashful nature of Bill Gates, people in management seem to need to find what works best for them. Entrepreneurs also find themselves in a place of power, and their responsibilities can span across companies and in some cases countries. There are many given traits that are needed to become an entrepreneur. For one, you need to be able to think outside of the box and be creative. Without creativity, an entrepreneur is just a manager who doesn’t have any ideas that will ignite the following. Let’s first look at a case study. If you look at some of the most important entrepreneurs in the history of the country, you can see that there are many entrepreneurs who had dysfunctional managerial styles but very clear-cut leadership styles. Steve Jobs was often questioned about his managerial skills, but no one seemed to question his leadership. While Steve Jobs didn’t really have much of a great managerial track record, he definitely found a way to get the most out of his employees and have them think big. That is the most important aspect of what an entrepreneur should strive to be (Covin, 2002). An entrepreneur needs to think big rather than containing a group within a box and maintaining order, which is what a manager should strive to do. Leadership is actually more closely intersected with entrepreneurship according to Claudia C. Cogliser. Many legal scholars and scientists have realized that in order for an entrepreneurship to be successful, he or she needs to be confident. Confidence is more developed in leaders than managers. While managers do need some type of confidence, they often become unconfident when they need to improvise. Leaders, on the other hand, live in this unpredictability and need to make decisions off the cusp of their minds. The researchers found that the more traits a person had that corresponded to leadership, the more they were likely to create real change within a system (Cogliser, 2004). In this case, the researchers were using not-for-profit public-school systems in order to extract their data. They found hard evidence that people were more likely to exhibit leadership qualities than managerial qualities. They also found that there were different types of leadership, some of which limited one’s entrepreneurship ability. There is a more passive form of leadership and there is a more aggressive form of leadership. These researchers decided that the more aggressive form was more in line with the entrepreneurship model because it allowed people to think outside the box without being afraid of failure. I believe that this makes perfect sense, as entrepreneurs need to be unafraid of failure.
