The Giver, by Lois Lowry tells the reader about the different characteristics of each character. This book is a dystopian novel about an unrealistic world, and the lives of The Giver, the Receiver and the others who live there. The reader gets to know more about Jonas, and The Giver throughout the events in the story. The protagonist, a twelve year old boy named Jonas discovers through the memories that The Giver gives to him that the world he knows used to be very different. Through Jonas’s selection as Receiver and his training, the reader discovers that Jonas is kind, intelligent, and curious.

Intelligence is important to his training, and he needs intelligence to be selected. In chapter eight the Chief Elder “With her hand still firmly on his shoulder, the Chief Elder listed the qualities. Intelligence she said.” (62). She also said that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school days. To be the receiver you must have the qualities/characteristics they want, one of the characteristics was intelligence, Jonas has those qualities therefore he was selected.

Jonas shows his curiosity when The Giver gives him a memory and he starts asking questions about why and when his world changed. When Jonas got his rules he was concerned about “you may lie”, he started to wonder if the adults got the same sentence. The Giver gave Jonas a memory of snow, sleds, and hills and he starts asking questions. “Why don’t we have snow, and sleds, and hills” he asked. “And when did we, in the past? Did my parents have sleds when they were young? Did you?”(83) In the quote Jonas is asking a lot of questions about the memory and his everyday life.
