However, some people do not and as they grow, which can impact their growth in a negative way most of the time. In Jonas’s community, as people graduated from eleven to twelve and got assignments, they could not do free hours like they once did when they were younger. I believe that Jonas chose to leave his community because he was not understood in his community and there was no freedom of choice his community really offered. He understood what heavy actions a person might face if they break these rules and always avoided breaking them. When Jonas became a receiver, he was scared because he was told that his training would be painful and hard, as well as the fact that he had the option to lie. He had felt such things until he met The Giver. In their first meeting, The Giver gave Jonas a memory while he explained what Jonas would do as a Receiver. The memory The Giver gave Jonas was the memory of a sled on top of a hill with snow. This memory gave great joy to Jonas, as he had fun sliding down the hill. When Jonas was finished receiving the memory, The Giver helped him understand the objects he just saw and explained to him that he just saw snow. After he was done understanding what the memory was about and what the position of a Receiver really was, Jonas questioned The Giver about why the things in the memory are not here now in which The Giver told him it was because of sameness. After talking about the plan, Jonas asks The Giver to come with him. However, The Giver refuses this because as soon as the community receives these memories, they will need some help. Compared to the other memories the community received, the memories that Jonas has would make the community go into chaos. Because of that, the Giver has to stay and help the community. Jonas planned to leave the community the night before the ceremony, however, something quickly made Jonas leave earlier than he expected to. At the evening meal at his family home, Jonas’s father told him that Gabriel would be released tomorrow morning. Because of that, Jonas was forced to leave that night with Gabriel. He stole food to keep rations and also stole his father's bike, as it was the only bike he could use since he was taking Gabriel with him. They traveled for days on bikes, only stopping to either rest and eat or hide from planes that were searching for them. As they went farther and farther, the area around them was much colder. Because of this, Jonas shared memories of warmth to keep himself and Gabriel warm. Eventually, they came across a hill which Jonas struggled to climb. As Jonas approached the summit of the hill, something began to happen. He began, suddenly, to feel happy. He recalled many happy memories with his parents and his sister, as well as his friends and The Giver.
