Charles Dickens was a famous writer during the Victorian Era, he finished a total of 14 novels in his lifetime before he tragically died of a stroke. Dickens was an inspiring novelist, with his brilliant stories, but he has pages of his own story. He has a great life behind his cover, so let’s see what his story has to tell of his work and his early and later life. First, in Dickens’ early life as a child, he loved reading books. He especially read the picaresque novels of Tobias Smollett and Henry Fielding, as well as Robinson Crusoe and Gil Blas. He also read “The Arabian Nights” and the “Collected Farces of Elizabeth Inchbald” more than once. This shows he already has an interest in literature, it also means he develops a great imagination (Wikipedia.com). At the same time, Dickens’ family was in Marshalsea debtors prison in Southwark, London in 1824. His father rapidly mounted debt, since he was unable to pay off all the debts, Dickens’ family was put in debtors prison. All of this means that Dickens’ didn’t have an easy childhood when he turned twelve. This was supposedly his saddest days (Wikipedia.com). First (right after “Sketches by Boz” was published) he began to write sequels. One was “The Pickwick Papers” that was written after the “Sketches by Boz.” It was Dickens’ first novel, the novel was published in monthly installments from March 1836 to November 1837. Next was “Oliver Twist,” Dickens’ second novel. The publications of “Oliver Twist” began before the publications of “The Pickwick Papers.” From February 1837 to April 1839. Another novel written by Dickens’ was “The Old Curiosity Shop.” It was first published in April 1840 and was last published in February 1841. It seems that some of Dickens’ novels like that have been listed, were based on something or someone in his life
