Charles Dickens was an outstanding English writer and is famous for his phenomenal works. He produced some of the greatest non-fictional characters during the Victorian era. He was known as the best writer during those times. Not only was he a writer but was also a social critic. He had somewhat of a good childhood and was blessed with both of his parents and had 6 other siblings. Charles ‘struggles and his experiences are what influenced him to create and write his novels that would later be the best works that anyone during his lifetime had ever read. The famous Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsmouth on February 7, 1812. His mother along with his siblings had went to stay with his father at the prison called Marshalsea. Charles was only twelve but was left to work at a factory up until his whole family could come back home. The family was not able to return until the Navy believed John had paid for what he had done. Working at the factory, being so young, and living away from his family had destroyed Charles because he was so used to living with his family. In the article “Dickens: A Biography,” the author David Cody says, “Dickens, already scarred psychologically by the experience was wounded even more by his mother’s insistence that he continue working at the factory.” (n.p.) He thought his mother would have sympathy for him due to the circumstances but he was wrong. Fortunately, his father had come to his rescue and let him decide whether he wanted to continue or stop. He chose to stop so he could enjoy the rest of his childhood years of being just a kid. The story is about Ebenezer Scrooge and how he transforms from a selfish hateful person to a kindhearted giving old man. Which is brought about by a terrifying haunting that makes him look back in the past to when he was happier. This story shows Charles’ literary style because it has repetition, allegory, imagery, and symbolism. These tools are powerful to the story and the meaning that Charles is trying to portray to the reader. It’s a good example of showing how brilliant Charles ‘literary style is. Although many see A Christmas Carol as an exhilarating story that can teach a lesson, there are some people that have different opinions. In an article written by Stephanie Allen, she gives her opinion on the loved Christmas classic. She implies that the story is confusing and can take the reader into a mindset that is totally opposite from what Charles is trying to do. She states, “The story’s very opening sentence, ‘Marley was dead, to begin with’ insists on a subversion and upending of norms that will persist throughout the book, driving its reader in circles of speculation and uncertainty” (Allen). Stephanie believes that the whole story is just confusing and does not teach anything to people in today’s generation because the story was written for the Victorian society.
