Charles Luciano was born on November 24, 1897 and died on January 26, 1962. He was born in Sicily but was raised in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Luciano came to America when he was just 10 years old. Luciano went to school until he was just 14 years old, when he eventually dropped out. When he did drop out he began to sell hats. He earned about seven dollars a week by doing this. Soon Luciano won $244 in a dice game on the streets and he quickly saw a much better opportunity to make money. After quitting his hat selling job he started earning money on the street. After quitting his job selling hats his parents sent him to the Brooklyn Truant School to try and change his ways. His criminal record started within just a few years after he came here. One of the things he did was charge jewish kids pennies for him to protect them to and from school.If a kid refused to do this, Luciano would get his revenge by beating them up. One day this did not work in his favor as he failed to beat up one by,but they actually join together as a team.This boy was Meyer Lansky. His biggest crime as a young man was selling drugs. He was sentenced to 6 months at a reformatory. By 1927 he was the top lieutenant Giuseppe “Joe the Boss” Masseria. Masseria was a mob boss that spoke very little english and he was very prejudice, which got in the way when it came to profits. In 1929 Lucky Luciano received his nickname after surviving a brutal beating and stabbing by a group of men who had abducted him. No one was quite sure who made the call to do this to him, some said the police and others said Masseria. Luciano finally had enough of Masseria. Luciano became very involved with the labor union activities that controlled most of the Manhattan waterfront. In addition to this they also controlled garbage hauling, construction, the Garment Center business and trucking. After that he wanted to try to make everything between all of the mafia members a little more peaceful. He had tried to form an organized crime network to deal with an problems between families. He brought in more people than just the ones from the five families, he reached around the country.An example is Chicago’s own Al Capone. In the1930s Luciano tried to branch out into such things as, bootlegging, prostitution, gambling, loan-sharking, narcotics and labor rackets. Trying this did not go great for him. In 1936 he was charged for prostitution and received 30 to 50 years in prison. Being in prison did not stop him from being in control as he still led his syndicate from prison.
