Throughout history, there have been many serial killers, but none quite like Charles Manson. Manson as a teenager went through multiple institutions, and often escaped and committed a crime before being caught. Later in his life he started a cult known as his “family”. Manson’s “family”, a cult in the late 60’s went on a killing spree including the famous actress Sharon Tate. Manson was a man with some serious mental problems and was a danger to society.
Manson’s Childhood

While the Manson family was digging the “Bottomless Pit” , in Death Valley, police raided the area and arrested the family(crimemuseum.org, 2017). The trial began on June 15, 1970, the Tate-LaBianca trial was against Manson, Watson, Atkins, and Krewinkel. They were charged with seven counts of murder and one count of conspiracy. Kasabian, revived immunity for testifying and describing the murders. After one month a jury was selected, Kasabian was on the stand for 18 days. Manson at one point disrupted the testimony and showed the article “Manson Guilty, Nixon Declares”. The defense used this to try and move for a mistrial, but it was declined(crimemuseum.org, 2017). Manson had heavy influence on those prosecuting him, Barbara Hoyt was lured by a member of the Manson family to Hawaii and given dangerous amounts of LSD. Ronald Hughes, an attorney was also found dead after the trial and was rumored to be killed by another family member. The jury ruled in favor that the family members were guilty, they were sentenced to the death penalty. In 1972, California ruled that the Death Penalty was unconstitutional and Manson and his family evaded death(crimemuseum.org, 2017). They were instead given life in prison.
Currently
All those who were tried are now in prison, Manson has applied for parole 12 times and has been denied every single time. Susan Atkins died in 2009, Krewinkel is still alive and in prison.
