Sir Charles Spencer “Charlie” Chaplin is a vital part of American entertainment history.
Though known widely for his acting career Chaplin was also a composer, writer, son, brother, father, and husband. Charlie had a rough start to life but held his head up through hardships to emerge successfully.
Before the success Charlie Chaplin was just that; Charlie Chaplin, not the tramp, nor an icon, just a boy with a dream. Charlie was born in 1889 to Charles Chaplin Sr. and Hannah Chaplin in London, England. Charles Chaplin Sr., who was 25 at Charlie’s birth, lived as a successful actor and vocalist until he passed at the age of 37 due to alcohol abuse, which happened to be a very common problem amongst many music hall stars at the time. Hannah Chaplin, who went by the stage name of Lily Harley, had her fair share of fame as an actress and singer who dabbled in the opera field. Unfortunately, her career came to an end when her voice let her down one particular performance. After that she lived a short while as a poverty-stricken seamstress until eventually put under the care of professionals in America just seven years before her death in 1928 for her mental illness that she had been struggling with most of her life. He began producing his own films and shot many commercials because of his desire for more control over his films. In 1918 however, Charlie signed with First National Exhibitors Circuit (F.N.E.C.) to personally assist him in exploiting the films Charlie needed to release in an effort to make them more attractive to the public eye. Sometime later however, Charlie finally signed with United Artists (U.A.) to form a very efficient team.
