Weakness, defeat, and inadequacy are all feelings people encounter with failure. For instance, working towards a goal and not reaching it may inflict problems and pain. However, is failure truly a sign of deterioration or a milestone necessary for positive change? Throughout my personal and non-personal experiences, I have realized that the dictionary definition of failure is not accurate.
To further explain, I was introduced to a life with insufficient funds in 2010. My parents have always been hard workers, but during this point in time, their earnings did not match their unrelenting effort. After reaching promising improvements, scientists decide to carry out the same surgical procedure Algernon had on a human. The person that undergoes surgery, Charlie Gordon, is a 30-year-old man born with mental disabilities. Months after surgery, Charlie’s intelligence quotient increases, and his new way of grasping knowledge makes him one of the smartest men in the world. Despite this, the prosperity of Charlie’s surgery was cut short with side effects. His intelligence began to retract to where it started and soon after, his life came to an end. Upon reading this book, people may believe that the surgical procedure was a failure for Charlie, but I disagree. Charlie had the opportunity to comprehend ideas he never understood and he was able to change his life in a positive way because of the surgery. For instance, Charlie was violently and verbally abused to act as a normal child by his mother. This traumatized Charlie and unknowingly fueled him to always please others while being a mentally disabled adult. After surgery, Charlie was able to recall memories and he visited his mother and sister for the first time since he was a child. Charlie’s surgery helped him realize he was emotionally hurt by his mother and this motivated him to seek closure in his painful past. Though Charlie’s intelligence quotient was increased for a short amount of time, his developed mind helped him understand and move past feelings that hurt his everyday life. The surgery that Algernon and Charlie went through caused an unexpected ending, but they lived a more fulfilling life because of
