Charlie's C.A. Analysis The main character in “Flowers for Algernon,” is Charlie Gordon. Charlie is 37 years old and struggles with reading and writing. Doctors Nemur and Strauss want to perform an operation on him to make him smarter. They have performed the operation only on animals, one in particular was a mouse named Algernon. The decided to perform the surgery on Charlie which made him get smarter. "I was seeing them clearly for the first time - not gods or even heroes, but just two men worried about getting something out of their work." (PR 10, pg. 49). Charlie figured it out that the doctors just wanted money, but ieth him being smarter he wanted to help people. When Charlie began to become smarter, Algernon started to change. Algernon later died and right when he did Charlie went down hill by becoming less smart. Charlie started to not talk to anyone. "She says I'm a fine person and I'll show them all. I asked her why. She said never mind, but I shouldn't feel bad if I find out everybody isn't nice like I think." (PR 9, pg. 26). When Charlie became smarter and started noticing things, he began to see what others thought of him. He always tried to help people. Charlie started forming feelings towards Miss Kinnian as well as noticing that she has feelings for him as well. He doesn’t want to do anything that can hurt her or anyone else's feelings. Near the end of the story Charlie goes to a diner, a boy drops the dishes on the floor and everyone is laughing at him. The boys boss begins yelling at him. All the sudden it hit Charlie, he used to be that boy. Charlie stood up for him, knowing that he didn’t like when people did mean things to him without him realizing what was happening. Charlie thought about him not wanting to hurt people's feelings because he was once that person and he wanted to make a change. As the story keeps growing so do Charlie's
