Chemical Reactions March 25, 2024 Marcia Rowe Instructor: Julie Wenz CHMY 105- Exploration of chemistry Introduction: The objective of the chemical reaction experiment is to gain familiarity with several types of chemical changes through the implementation of a series of tests. Chemical reactions are processes that typically involve a chemical change, where the initial substances (reactants) differ from the resulting products. The presence of an arrow indicating the product signifies the occurrence of a chemical change. This experiment involves making observations, collecting data, and recording the outcomes. There are several indicators that confirm the taking place of a chemical reaction, such as a modification in color, the …show more content…

It is recommended to use Bunsen burners or gas stoves for this experiment. Use tongs to safely hold a piece of magnesium ribbon in the flame. Adjust the flame source until it is a steady blue color or as large as possible for a lighter. Obtain a clean piece of magnesium ribbon, place one end in the flame. Avoid looking directly at the magnesium ribbon during the experiment. Once the reaction is complete, place the tongs and magnesium ribbon on a heat-resistant surface. Turn off the flame source. Allow the magnesium ribbon to cool before taking a photo. observations of the reaction and any evidence of its occurrence. Clean up: Dispose of used pipets in the trash, along with any leftover magnesium ribbon. Pour all solutions in the well plate down the drain with cold running water. Clean all equipment used in the experiment using soap and water, ensuring it is dry before storing. Thoroughly clean all surfaces once the experiment is finished and the equipment is put …show more content…

This white precipitate serves as evidence of the chemical reaction taking place. The effervescence or bubbling observed during a reaction is indicative of the presence of hydrogen gas as a product. This physical observation provides evidence of the formation of hydrogen gas in the reaction. The effervescence observed during a reaction signifies the presence of carbon dioxide gas as a product, particularly in the reaction between sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid. The fizzing and bubbling observed during this reaction reveal the production of carbon dioxide gas, making the reaction visibly evident. The formation of a white powder serves as evidence of the presence of magnesium oxide as a product, which is a white solid formed when magnesium reacts with oxygen. The release of heat during the reaction, along with the observation of a bright light and the formation of a white powdery substance when magnesium is burned in the presence of oxygen, supports the generation of magnesium
