The City of Chicago is made up of two branches of government. These two branches include the Executive Branch and Legislative Branch.

The Executive Branch
The Mayor of Chicago - The mayor of Chicago is the leader of Chicago. The mayor works with city council, and his/her administration. The mayor is the leader of city council meetings. The mayor also creates a city budget, and appoints people to help him/her.

Election is held every four years.
There are no limits on a mayor’s term.
The current Mayor of Chicago is Rahm Emanuel. Rahm Emanuel was elected in 2011.
The Legislative Branch

Can take over Governor’s job if the Governor is away from office. (4 year term)
Secretary of State - The secretary of state is responsible for issuing drivers licenses, and taking care of the State Capitol. (4 year term)
Attorney General - Highest legal officer in Illinois. Job is to protect the citizens of Illinois. (4 year term)
Legislative Branch
The Legislative Branch in Illinois is named the Illinois General Assembly. The Illinois General Assembly is made up of a senate and a house of representatives.

Illinois Senate - Is responsible for creating laws, overriding vetoes, working on a state budget, and can also impeach. The Illinois Senate is made up of 59 senators. Each district in Illinois elects 1 senator to represent their district. Most Senators have a term of four years.

Illinois House of Representatives - Is responsible for creating bills. There are 118 representatives. Members of the House of Representatives have a 2 year limit with no term limits.

Judicial Branch
The Judicial Branch is made up of 3 courts.

The Vice President takes over if the President dies or is seriously injured.

Cabinet - Is chosen by the President and the Senate approves the members. The cabinet members communicate with the President and talk about issues such as the economy, security, health, jobs, and education.
Legislative Branch
The Legislative Branch is made up of a senate and house of representatives. The members of the senate and house of representatives are named congress.

Senate - 2 members of each state are elected. This means that there are 100 senators. A senator’s term is 6 years and there are no term limits.
House of Representatives - There are 435 House of Representative members. If the population of a state is large, they get more members compared to a state with a small population. Representatives have 2 year terms and there is no term limit.
Judicial Branch
The Supreme Court- The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States. The supreme court is in charge of defending the Constitution and will take court cases that are important to U.S. laws. The court cases have to have great importance. Supreme Court members are chosen by the President, and approved by the Senate. There is no yearly term limit for judges on the Supreme Court. There are 9 Supreme Court Judges
