I believe that every student regardless of race, gender, religion, etc. deserves to feel safe while on campus. During this activity, I saw that many of my peers felt the complete opposite on campus. It was the first time that they had been asked this question and felt hesitant to share. I feel that some students are so accustomed to feeling unsafe on campus that has become an everyday struggle to find that safe space they’ve been looking for. Therefore, I think the public google map is good idea because students now have the resources to find these safe spaces. It is also interesting to see how safe/unsafe spaces differ on the map as some students may find safe spaces very unsafe. This makes me think of what defines a safe/unsafe space. This can make students feel unsafe when want to express their culture here on campus. I noticed that places like the cross-cultural center, hart hall, and Chicano/a success center were places of safety for Chicano/a students. I think that diversity helps makes these places seem safer as we are considered a minority on campus. Even at our own university, Chicano/a students are being marginalized as Bernal Dolores Delgado mentions in Using a Chicana Feminist Epistemology in Educational Research. She uses this as in argument of the importance for using Chicana Feminist perspective in research. She believes that the Chicana’s struggle against racism, cultural domination, and sexism develops society’s push towards social justice. During this activity I noticed that many of the student’s responses differed based on their race and gender. I thought of this article during this activity because this institutional racism exists on the college campus based on responses from peers. The University holds the power to make the campus safe for everyone regardless of race, gender, religion, etc. However, students feel unsafe on campus due to the racism which is present beginning in elementary school. Delgado-Bernal and Aleman face political issues head on as students are affected by politicain’s decision which many not be in their best interest. Issues like immigration effect both Chicano elementary and college students alike. Programs like Aldente help students navigate through this very political education system which I think can be carried on to high education. Aldente creates this safe space for these young students so that they can learn without being suppressed by politics, stereotypes, etc. This can be used in a college environment where we are faced with the same issues every day. To create safe spaces on campus, all students should be able to feel safe, so they can learn and develop throughout their time here at the University. Aldente helps foster this sense of community through mentorship which I think this activity does as well. When looking at the map of safe/unsafe spaces on campus, I
