After you broke a rule as a child, did your mom ever bring out the belt? Did your dad ever come home with that look in his eye? Were you afraid that at any moment they would snap? Numerous children deal with these types of scenarios and much worse every day, and regardless if the parents have virtuous intentions in mind, there are countless other more effective and less inhumane ways of dealing with a trouble making child. Something needs to be set straight first. Corporal punishment and child abuse are two completely different things. Child abuse is any act or failure to act on that results in a child’s physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, exploitation or death. Sweden has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, which goes to show that they have been able to find effective was to discipline their child without physical punishment. There are abundant alternatives to spanking. The best alternative is to give clear and simple directions in a stern clear voice, so the child knows what they need to do. Also, when giving directions have the last word be the word the child needs to hear. For example, do not say “do not run,” instead say “stop.” The child will only listen to the last word said, and with the first example run is not what the child needs to do. Another technique that is just as effective is rewarding polite behavior with minimal punishment for mischievous behavior. By doing it in this fashion, the child will learn that the only actions that are recognized are the courteous and well-mannered ones, and therefore only do the actions they get rewarded for. If a child is acting up while out for dinner, pay no attention to it. The main reason they are acting up is that they want attention, and if it is denied to them they will stop doing it. This way will be tough to deal with at first, but eventually it will work. To speed up the process when the child behaves at dinner offer dessert as a reward for being good. Observing that they only get the dessert when they behave, they will do that more often which is beneficial to both parties. These are not the only two options, in order to find the perfect punishment one needs to find out what works best for their own child and apply that form of
