They are abused, tricked and forced to be part of an auction where they are put behind glass and rendered as less than human, sold in a brothel and their name replaced by a number. Often people that are predators are of high status and well respected individuals. So it is hard to turn for help because others may disregard or neglect their words. This can also impede the likelihood of the children testifying. The children are very likely to come from poor families and will choose jobs like this as payment for their families.Often Victims of child trafficking and exploitation do not even realize that they are victims and can be as young as 7 years old, they do not understand what has happened to them. The kids vulnerabilities are used against them, so they have no choice but to listen to their assailant. They also video tape or photos to influence them or prevent from escaping. Which causes the children to feel embarrassed or lose self-worth because of their past and the assault they faced. Are reluctant to build trust with other people. Slave traders usually go for vulnerable people such as children that are abandoned, so it's hard for them to let people in after they suffer. Often when people come to help the children they will be reluctant to go because they may have been told by their attacker that they could help them or rely on them. So they doubt other people and are sometimes unable to recover their trust. Children are also exposed to harsh environments and trauma which can cause them to be damaged psychologically. Some are never returned to their families and never heard of again.
