Laurel Ulrich’s A Midwifes Tale is a book over Marth Ballard who was a New England women living in America. Ulrich uses Marth Ballard diary entries along with other historical documents from the eighteenth century to show her audience the life of women specifically a midwife in the American society, and the sexual standards that were present during the eighteenth century. Martha Ballard the wife of Ephraim Ballard was midwife during the eighteenth century in Hallowell, who not only played the role of a midwife in the society, but also the role of a wife and a mother. Ulrich starts to book by talking about scarlet fever epidemic that had taken places in Hallowell during the summer of 1787. During the time of the fever and after the epidemic had ended, Martha played the role of an important member in the community, even though the social structure in Hallowell was giving more importance to male doctors.
Historical Fiction Novel Analysis The novel The Midwife’s Apprentice by Karen Cushman is about a 13 year old girl called Brat who has not found her place in society until she meets Jane the Midwife. Brat undergoes several identity changes when she changes her name from Brat to Beetle then eventually to Alyce. This novel is set in a small village in England during the 14th century. Brat was accustomed to the lifestyle of sleeping in dung heaps and traveling on foot from village to village begging for her next meal.

There are many sources for historians to use when interpreting the past, but it is impossible to have enough to get a perfect portrayal of the past, no matter which time period. Even the primary sources are likely biased, and sometimes incomplete. The details that are unavailable are supplemented with what the historian believes to be most likely. In this case, historians must use the information provided by previous sources, and their own imagination to form a conclusion. In the film, A Midwife’s Tale, historian Ulrich uses Martha’s account of her movements through town to map the spread of the canker rash through the town she lived in.(A Midwife’s Tale, 1990)

Midwives play an imperitive role when advising women on their care an it is exceptionally important to liase our information in a professional form. Guaranteeing the information is non-biased and informative allowing the women to have control on her decision making (NMC 2017). A quantitive research by Beglry (2010) agress that women who are in our care are to be considered as partners when deciding their plan of care. Within our role a professional relationship is central and women trust midwives deeply. I have found asking open-ended questions promotes and encoursges women to actively take part in the decision making.

The 1930’s was primarily encompassed of the Great Depression. The stock market crash of 1929 led to a downward spiral of the economy, and many families were forced into unwanted unemployment. While men faced the harsh reality of being out of work, woman transitioned themselves to accept the responsibility of being the primary “bread-winners” of the family. While women were becoming dominant in the work force, their profound role in society was overshadowed by many outdated Victorian Era gender biases. Many companies continued to utilize and portray the wide array of gender assumptions through various advertisements.
Motherhood is a beautiful transforming event in life for women and similar to marriage motherhood is also an institution. Also similar to marriage motherhood has myths that lie within the institution, it is defined as the motherhood mystique. There are four main myths of motherhood surrounding the ideology of how mothers are to be. First, “motherhood is the ultimate fulfillment of a woman” which implies that all women want to be mothers and have babies at some point in their life.

T.V. shows like “16 and Pregnant” discourage teen pregnancy because it shows you just how hard it would be a parent at such young age and how it effects a lot more people than just the parents.

Paying students for grades has been a very debatable topic for the past decade; with students having the ability to earn hundreds of dollars. Students could earn over $100 every two weeks. As a seventh grader, up to $500 a year or more; and as a fourth grader, $250. In addition, many parents and teachers struggle over the prospect of giving their kids such a huge sum of money.
Midwives handled most matters of gynecology. Although male doctors had more theoretical knowledge about female genitalia, midwives had more practical knowledge, so most male physicians left gynecology to them. Midwives are most notably known for assisting women in birth. They handled everything from prenatal care to “baby-catching”, or the actual birthing process, to cutting the umbilical cord. Some midwives were even known to perform cesarean sections by the Late Middle Ages.

The writer opines that the statement put forward by Senior still holds merit today as we live in a society that favours pronatalism. Pronatalism refers to any attitudes or policies which encourage reproduction and exalt the role of parenthood (Peck). Pronatalism makes assertions about what provides a woman’s ultimate fulfilment in life, and what her destiny will be.
