The factors that influenced me to become a paraeducator are my passion to work with children and the desire to make a positive difference in their lives. I want to help children succeed and reach their full potential both socially and academically. When my twin boys (who are now 21) were in elementary school, I spent many hours volunteering weekly in both of their classrooms. I helped the teacher by preparing learning materials and I worked in small groups or with individuals with reading and math. I loved the time I spent in the schools with the children and loved the school environment.
Every dime I earn working at Reynolds Community College and every grant and scholarship I receive will go towards my passion of studying human behavior and applying everything I learn to bringing every community I can reach, a giant leap forward. After receiving my associates degree in Social a Science I decided to take a year off to work towards finding what it is that I really want to pursue. I have searched for that 'something ' that will keep me intrigued and awake all hours of the night without realizing it. I have eliminated the idea of simply working to make ends meet or finding a good job to support my family and "living" outside the 40+ hours of a weekday job. I am pursuing much more and I am confident that I have found a path leading me to wake up before my alarm clock sounds instead of praying for more time.
I am a first-generation college student who aged out of the foster care system. My formative experiences in foster care led me the profession of social work. I earned a BSW (San José State University) and MSW (University of Michigan) with a specialization in social policy and evaluation in the practice area of children and youth in families. During my second year of my MSW studies, I was invited to speak at the White House bill-signing ceremony of the Foster Care Independence Act (FCIA), based on my advocacy work to reform the foster care system. This invitation led to an MSW field practicum at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where I worked on the implementation of the FCIA.
Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with areas of study in Psychology and Criminal Justice. A Bachelor’s degree in these areas of study, can open the doors to many different career paths ranging from human services to research to counseling. Personally, I would like to seek a career that will allow me to have an impact on other people’s lives. For this reason, I choose to explore the career of a Foster Care Placement Specialist. To better understand the, job responsibilities, employment requirements and pros and cons of this career I decided to seek counsel from my friend, Rachel Zimmerman, a Family Services Specialist with the Virginia Department of Social Services.
Cheerleading officially became a sport in July of 2021, but why was it not considered a sport long before that? Like with any other sport, there is a lot of dedication and practice. It is also important to be mentally focused to prevent injuries. Cheer requires one to be flexible, strong, a team worker, a tumbler, and much more. I understand that people may not view cheerleading as a sport, because they see us on the sideline cheering at other sporting events.
Upon your request, I have written an informative career report using research on a topic in my major field, childcare worker. In the report I have included my findings on the education needed, important characteristics/skills to have, job expectations, and the job outlook for a childcare worker. While doing my research, I realized that in order for a person to succeed in this field, one must have certain characteristics/skills. One must have good communication skills, decision-making skills, instructional skills, interpersonal skills, and most importantly be very patient. In addition, I also realized that this profession can become very demanding and tiring sometimes.

During my time at placement I was given the role of a Nursery Assistant; My duties were to plan and prepare activities for children, read stories, nappy change them, observe and make notes for use in their reports. I was also a key worker for one child, I had to monitor their progress and share information about their development with their parents and carers. The setting was a warm and welcoming environment, I found that all of the staff were very friendly and reassuring. The placement lasted for four weeks and I worked from Monday to Friday from 8:30AM to 5:30PM. On my first day I arrived at 10AM for my induction and was introduced by the manager of the setting to the other members of staff.
Personal Statement I come from a large family with relatives from a little ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico. Many of which have never made it past grade school. Mainly due to their mother, my grandma, she had fallen very ill. Due to her condition and lack of money my aunts and uncles dropped out of school to work and help pay for her medication and medical expenses. The arrival of a new baby, especially the first always marks a new beginning for a mother. It comes with a lot of challenges more so if the mother is less knowledgeable about baby care. Take such as cleaning the baby for the first time, or feeding, it is not easy. The baby is still fragile and slippery and needs a special care. But if the mother is not ready for all these, or maybe, does not have any knowledge on what to do, the baby’s life might be endangered since the baby needs a special care which only the mother can give.
