The Civil War was a time when the future of America was a question, with no idea what was going to take place or develop from start to finish.There was however another thing in the Civil War that had no definite future, children.Whether they were on the battlefield, in the house, in the fields working, or stranded in an orphanage their future was not to be assured. Drafting to get on the battlefield was different depending if you lived in the north or the south. If you lived in the north you had to be 18 to take the position of a soldier and 16 to be a musician (S 2). The south was a bit different starting a required age of 18 and then dropping the age level to 17 in the year 1864 (S 2). The children of slaves never even saw the chance to do something with their lives, if their parents were a slave then they were automatically one too (S6). The kids commonly got separated from their families at auctions (S3). The slave children were even sold twice or more times from master to master. Even if a slave child had more fair skin than the normal african american, due to master taking advantage of their mother, it didn't matter, and they were not to speak about the topic (S6). During the average day of the Civil War the children had to listen to the southerners comments on the war, which were biased as in saying that the north will never defeat them and get what they are after (S3). This of course gave the slave children no hope, for they were thinking they would be slaves till the end of their time. In the day they also had to educate the white children, even though themselves were only a few years older than the student. The slave children also dreamed of escaping to the north or a union camp were they hoped to be safe (S3). All they could do to relieve what they were going through is to hope the union will take
