There are so many different forms of disabilities that people may have. These can range from physical disabilities that people can see to ones that are hidden. Learning disabilities is one that is hidden or not physically visible. In school, teachers may be aware of these disabilities but classmates may not be. Children with learning disabilities store and organize their brains differently. They do not have intelligence problems, but rather they have problems reading, writing, and problems with mathematics (Yüksel, 2013). Prater, Serna, and Nakamura (1999) found that it may appear that children with learning disabilities have the same number of social interactions as their peers without disabilities, but they differ in the quality of conversation. Social skills training has been predicted to help academic success. These trainings cover a horizon of social skills that can reflect over to help children with their learning difficulties. These skills include problem solving, friendship development, conversation skills, planning skills, and dealing with emotions and feelings. In addition, basic skills such as asking a question, apologizing, learning to listen, and introducing yourself to others can be such as small skill that has a huge impact on helping children have success interpersonally. When teaching children social skills, a variety of teaching methods can be used such as direct instruction, modeling, rehearsal techniques, prompting, and reinforcement practices can be used (Kavale and Mostert, 2004). Children with learning disabilities tend to be less liked and socially neglected with their peers. Children with learning disabilities may not be able to sympathize or empathize with other students which leads to other students thinking negative thoughts about them or staying away from them. Nowicki, Brown, and Stepien (2014) believe that children with learning disabilities may face social exclusion due to the inability to read verbal or non-verbal social cues. Even if children are placed in the least restrictive environment being the general education classroom, they face the possibilities of being socially excluded. Studies have shown that social exclusion is extremely common in educational environments that most parents and teachers overlook (Nowicki, Brown, & Stepien, 2014). In the classroom, children with disabilities face problems with social networking due to placement in special education classrooms, social skill deficits like mentioned before, and the stigma that comes with being labeled with a disability. Pham and Murray (2016) also focused on this in their article saying children with disabilities are at risk for social isolation and neglect from peers.
