Chile’s government is a democratic republic, meaning the head of state (in this case the president) is elected through a democratic multi party system. The Chilean president is not only the head of state but head of government as well. Prominent political parties are grouped into two major coalitions, first the center-left coalition “New Majority” and second the center-right coalition “Alliance”. The Chilean president is elected for a four year term and cannot be elected for consecutive terms. Chile’s current President Michelle Bachelet represents the socialist party and the New Majority coalition. The President’s veto cannot stop a law from passing as long as long as it has support from at least two thirds of Chile’s national congress. Chile is one of the most affluent and stable nations in South America. It is the world’s leading source of copper and though high prices have greatly stimulated Chile’s economy its lack of economic diversity is slowly becoming a prominent issue. Furthermore Chile’s fantastic economic policies have more than halved poverty rates since 2006. In addition Chile is seen as one of the least corrupt nations today with fantastic ratings in domestic polls. Chile strongly endorses free trade and welcomes a huge amount of foreign investment. Chile has free-trade agreements with a vast group of nations from around the world. Chile’s sound economic policies have brought steady growth since the 1980’s. Not only is Chile thriving in terms of economic policies but domestic as well. Chile’s constitution has been amended frequently since 1980, most of these amendments center around progressive ideals and the removal of undemocratic sections such as those pertaining to unelected senators and the incapability of the head of state to get rid of the commander of the armed forces.
