Dear Ms. Snyder, Meet Jimmy. Every day since the start of kindergarten, Jimmy would drink an insane 10-15 cartons of chocolate milk a week at school. By third grade, he was above the suggested weight for his age. By the end of sixth grade, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Jimmy now suffers from high blood pressure, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and is at an increased risk for heart attack or stroke. Do you Ms. Snyder want our sprague students to turn out like Jimmy even if he’s only a fictional character? NO! Chocolate milk at Sprague could cause all this extra harm and should be removed from our lunch menus because It a harmful amount of sugar, kids do not consume any extra helpful nutrients, and finally because kids drink an insane amount. One reason why chocolate milk should not be in schools is because it has lots of sugar. In fact, a carton of chocolate milk has 20% more sugar than a 8 ounce can of coke according to “More harmful than helpful” By Jonathan Smith. We already know chocolate milk has too much sugar and it would be shocking to find out how much that turns out to be. Many children are not allowed to drink chocolate milk at home so they drink a lot at school says “More harmful than helpful” by Jonathan Smith. And I mean a lot. In fact, a school cafeteria worker explains “We serve 6-7 chocolate milks for each plain milk”. This can total up to 10-15 cartons a week. And how much sugar is that exactly? Well 15 cartons times 30 grams of sugar per carton… That’s 450 grams a week. 450 grams a week times 52 weeks a year is 23,400 grams a year!
