Throughout ancient and modern times, we used sugar on a wide variety of foods, from salmon to bagels. It has been something that we have put of foods for centuries and we have not noticed that using sugar can cause sickness’s, such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes. In the article “It’s the Sugar, Folks”, by Mark Bittman, it explains the reasons that sugar can be toxic, specifically fructose. Fructose can lead to many things, such as obesity, but can also lead to diabetes. In a variety of studies from trusted sources, they explain that if there is more sugar available to a population, the rates of people getting diabetes grows. As I have said, if the availiability of sugar is increased in a population, the number of people that get diabetes rises. This can happen to anyone, even someone who is not overweight or exercises often. This shows that eating a lot of sugar can lead to many problems throughout life, such as becoming overweight or the possibility of getting diabetes. The FDA should step in to put sugar as a Toxin. All of the studies that has been showed have led to scientists believing that sugar is toxic. The FDA should go and relook at the recommended daily standards for sugar, and removing fructose from the “generally recognized as safe” list because it is what causes the companies to contaminate all of our food supplies. If they do this, it can lower the rates of people getting diabetes, and hopefully putting it to an all-time low. Metabolic syndrome, a syndrome that is caused by eating too much sugars, can lead to you having strokes or becoming overweight, which can lead to death. Eating too much sugars can cause you to have strokes and become overweight, even if you are of “normal” weight. The syndrome is caused by insulin resistance, which is a direct result of the consumption of added sugars.
