When you go to a local gas station like 7 eleven, Wawa, or Cumberlands and get a large drink do you ever pay attention as to how much soda or sugar is in the drink. In one soda of coke there is an average amount of 39 grams in the 12 oz drink. That means if you were to go to 7-eleven right now and got the Big Gulp a 30 oz drink of coke. After finishing that drink you have just consumed around 98 grams of sugar from just one large drink. In New York city a ban on sugary drinks was proposed by the mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg wanted sugary drinks above 16 oz to be banned. First off, the soda ban was wanting to be put into place due to safety concerns of health. Michael Bloomberg has fought in the past in banning trans fat in restaurants, and wanted to ban sugary drinks for health concerns of New York. The average amount of sugar in a 16 oz soda is around 40 to 45 grams. About 65% of people drink large sugary drinks and not at places are the same, fast food restaurant large cups can range from chick-fil a 20 oz cup, McDonald's 32oz, and Burger Kings 40 oz cup. That means if you were to get a large coke from Burger King, there is 130 grams of sugar that like eating 9 bananas in one meal. Though, there are drinks that you could benefit from like cranberry juice, and orange juice, to promote your health. As stated in the article ”how much sugar is in a can of soda” it states that “ overeating sugar is linked an increased risk of many serious diseases, including obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.” The only downside is that if too much is consumed it could take a toll on your health. Right now obesity is a major problem in the U.S. because people are not paying attention to their own health.
