Chris McCandless was the kind of person who strongly believed in following his dreams and unlike many, he actually followed them. I give him a lot of credit for doing so and he inspires me to follow my dreams. A lot of people say that he was suicidal, however it was his dream that ended up leading to his death. The author, Jon Krakauer, seems to see Chris as an adventurer. He dismisses the common viewpoint that Chris did not understand his surroundings or the risks associated with living in the Alaskan wilderness.
Chris McCandless was very adventurous, he liked being outdoors whether it was to hunt and fish or to be alone in nature. McCandless is also very compassionate to people who are hungry and poor. These are just a few characteristics that he shows throughout the beginning of the book. McCandless, as a child, spent a lot of time in the outdoors with his family camping and hiking. Being outdoors was a major part of Chris’ life because he eventually travelled into the wilderness alone to isolate himself.
Numerous People state that Chris McCandless was a very thoughtless individual who made crazy decisions after graduating college. Yet many people found his actions to be inspiring as he risked his life to flee the hectic world that surrounded him. As Chris was raised in a perfect environment, living in wealthy middle-class, His relationship with his parents was very degenerating especially towards his father after he found out his dad cheated on his mother when he was younger. This ultimately led Chris to begin his trip to Alaska so he can find his true-self and to live life how it's meant to be lived.
Chris McCandless was never too thrilled over following and living by the rules his parent's imposed. He was always a rebel, following his parents' rules until he could escape to the wild. When they learned of their son's demise in Alaska, they were devastated at most parents would be. They didn't know that the last time they saw Chris, would be their last because of his intention to leave them. Upon Chris disappearing from their lives, they were angry but thought they would see him again.

Christopher McCandless is a rather complex character. His unique disdain towards authority has never been truly understood. However, in Into the Wild, chapter 9-13, Jon Krakauer shines light on Chris’s childhood and allows the reader to conclude that Chris survives due to his passion for adventure. To him it replenishes some sort of spiritual energy he cannot do without. For that reason, he indefinitely renounce any form of oppression and always refuses to conform.

Recently, the eighth grade class at Deer Park Middle School were required to read a book titled Into The Wild. The main character in this excellent book is an incredibly challenging character to dissect. William Corbett, a rather handsome student at Deer Park School, decided to pursue this topic. In the end, he discovered that Christopher McCandless (the main character in the novel) can be easily described as independent, reckless, and adventurous.

Chris McCandless abandoned the modern world and chose the wild because he believed that he could improve himself through living in the wild, and found the true happiness of the life. McCandless abandoned his wealthy family because of his complicated relationship with his father, and he was ashamed with his father’s adultery. Therefore, McCandless believed that human relationship was not the only thing that forms happiness, instead a man’s connection with the nature brings joy as well. He also believed the habitual lifestyle was not what people were meant to do, and people shouldn't have more possessions than what they need. For this reason, McCandless traveled with little effects.
Chris Mccandless was a smart, able and talented guy, he wanted to break away from society, live off the land and survive on his own, and find himself. He did, but at the cost of his life, and with one simple mistake he died in the Alaskan wilderness. Mccandless hoped to gain one thing from his life in the brush, and that was autonomy, a sense that he, Christopher Mccandless, could survive, all by himself in the wilds of America. One of his goals, in his search for the self, was to “Become Lost in The Wild” (163) and live off whatever kind of lands he found himself in. Chris accomplished this in his 2 years among strangers, tramps, and eventually new friends.
I disagree with the author that Chris McCandless was a crazy person, a sociopath, and an outcast, but even though he was very bright, he made some decisions. Before entering the wild Chris had just recently graduated from college with his degree. He was an intelligent student without any street smarts. Upon his departure, he left behind his sister whom he loved very much and his parents who he was upset with. That was a feeling he had especially about his father. His anger toward his parents and his eagerness to go on an exciting adventure around the country were the factors why he ultimately made the decision, thus going, “Into the Wild.”

A main reason many believe Chris went into the wilderness was because he was in search of his identity. From reading this book I have come up with my own opinion of what type of person he was. The conclusion I have reached about Chris is that he was a distant and ill-prepared person who had a very strong will.
