Nobody’s hurt, but there will still be pain.” People have either been in an accident and understand the emotions involved, or they have not and worry about what will happen in an accident. The emotional response is fear over the rising payments, and regret over being in an accident.
Tone and word choice are major key factors for getting readers a full and vivid experience of what you’re trying to tell them. In “The Devil’s Thumb”, Krakauer chooses to utilize downsizing, depressing words and phrases in his writing like, “Beyond shame”, “self-pity”, “felt so alone”, “abandoned”, “vulnerable”, etc. His word choice overall gives a bitter tone to the story. He uses these words to give a more vivid, detailed description of how he was truly feeling at that very moment. While stuck in a snow storm, sitting in a dug out hole, he thought, “Beyond shame, I cradled my head in my arms and embarked on an orgy of self-pity.”
David Brooks utilizes the rhetorical devices of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos to build his argument that disrespecting American values is counterproductive. First, Brooks uses the Rhetorical device of Pathos to appeal to the emotions of the reader. He says that “Over the centuries, this civic religion fired a fervent desire for change”(Par. 6). Brooks uses the word “fervent” in his writing, because it appeals to the emotions of the reader, It expresses the extent of the desire for change. This is known as pathos.

Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, is a Puritan sermon from the eighteenth century during the Great Awakening. During this time, Puritans had strayed from the church due to the church’s strict guidelines and regulations and begun to embrace more secular thought. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, was written to motivate people to join the newly refined church that embraced these secular thoughts. Jonathan Edwards uses rhetorical devices throughout his sermon to show God’s wrath on sinners and to instill the fear of God in Puritans. Jonathan Edward’s was a well respected clergyman of eighteenth century New England.
Secondly, Stetzer reaches the audience using pathos. He states we should learn to love, worship, represent, and celebrate our God who deserves all loyalty (Stetzer, 2017). By using pathos, the author uses strong words that clearly appeal to emotion and Christians know how important love for God is. This is effective because the targeted audience includes people who know about God and how worship is supposed to be. Another example is when Stetzer expresses “Well, I am deeply offended too-by this statistic.
In order to emphasize God’s contempt for the audience, Jonathan Edwards utilizes inflammatory diction and comparisons of God’s anger to a bow and arrow and “black clouds” to instill fear in the audience so that they will accept God as their savior, provoking a religious revival. Throughout the sermon, Edwards utilizes “fiery” phrases such as “furnace of wrath”, “wrath…burns like fire”, and “glowing flames of the wrath of God” in order to establish a connection between God’s fury and a burning fire, reaffirming the reality of going to hell, as hell is commonly associated with fire. Because fires are also very devastating and unpredictable, Edwards emphasizes the power and degree of God’s disdain and his ability to cause drastic change at unexpected times, making God’s patience seem fragile.
Rhetorical Analysis: Sinners A Puritan pastor in the early 1700s and philosopher, Jonathan Edwards, in his sermon, “Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God”, describes how angry God is towards sinners. Edward’s purpose was to scare sinners and unconverted men with the realities of hell so that they would seek a relationship with God. He adopts an aggravated tone to express to the sinners in his congregation that they should seek redemption because God can send them down to hell at any moment, but instead He gives them another chance. The metaphors and imagery that Edwards use in his sermon for the Great Awakening helps him to describe God’s wrath against sinners to make unsaved people convert back to the original ways of Puritans.

Cheever says this to emphasize the abruptness and intensity of the situation and how significant it is that there is no visual perception of anyone

Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality.
