The Life of Christina Rossetti
Christina Georgina Rossetti birth took place Dec. 5, 1830, London, England, born to Gabriele and Frances Rossetti. Rossetti wrote well known poetry and sometimes used the pen name of Ellen Alleyne. She excelled in works of fantasy, in poems for children, and in religious poetry (Bryson). Christina Rossetti once said “Can anything be sadder than work left unfinished? Yes, work never begun.” Staying strong Rossetti never lost hope on her work. In her poetry, Rossetti continued to celebrating Jesus in her life, even when she became ill. For many people Rossetti’s poems remain popular because they appear very vivid and well written. Rossetti, the youngest child out of four children, had much talent. Her father and brother (Dante Gabriel Rossetti) also wrote poetry, which presented Christina with some early exposure to writing. At four or five years old Rossetti wrote her first poem. The Rossetti’s were a scholarly, artistic, and liberal family, so it is not a surprise that Christina Rossetti began writing poetry at a very young age (Murphy). A major influence and drive for Rossetti’s writings was her devout religious belief (Avery). Rossetti trusted God in her troubles, in her poem “Uphill” she talks about how she will struggle through her life but God will reward at the end. She writes, “Does the road wind up-hill all the way?/ Yes, to the very end./ Will the day’s journey take the whole long day?/ From morn to night, my friend.” She continues to say that God will give her comfort and rest.
